Abu Garcia MAX® X Low Profile Reel

When I first laid eyes on the Abu Garcia MAX® X low profile reel, what I noticed first was how small it looked. It wowed me that Abu Garcia would take the MAX® X series reel and made it small. I picked it up from the table and placed it on the palm of my hands as if I was holding a gentle little puppy that was newly born. It looked so nice and small.

Its colours matches that of the much earlier launched Abu Garcia MAX® X spinning reels. It is a dark black reel with cherry red rubber handles that look yummy. I then brought to live the Abu Garcia MAX® X low profile reel by giving it a spin. Smooth as a… errr… I want to use the phrase baby’s bottom but then in today’s hypersensitive world such a phrase brings out the worse in the shallow minded buffoons. Oops I said it and I will say it again. Ok here goes… “As smooth as a baby’s bottom.” There you go; proper use of the English language.
The cherry red grips do look like candy.
The Abu Garcia MAX® X low profile reel feels light in the hands but solid. It does not feel light and fragile because it is not. It is like a deadly Muay Thai fighter hidding inside a cuddly teddy bear costume just waiting to pounce on any unsuspecting bullies. It comes with Abu Garcia’s well proven Duragear™ Brass gear of which is super tough, and tough machined aluminium spool to take on the pressure put on by hard fighting fishes.

As for speeds and in this case I mean retrieving rates; it will certainly not get you any speeding tickets but it is in no way slow either. At 25 inches per turn it still is fast but not as fast as some of its other brothers, cousins, etc. in Abu Garcia’s stable. It will be an awesome reel for certain types of fishing where lures, spoons, spinners, and soft plastic baits or soft baits are involved with.

Cast control is very much dependent on five magnets. Yes, the Abu Garcia MAX® X low profile reel comes with Abu Garcia’s proven MagTrax™ brake system. This makes the reel an awesome reel to learn baitcasting with. With that I mean no bullshit, no handicaps, and no babying. It’s harder to learn with but when you’ve got it; you are leaps and bounds above those who learned with handicap turned on. Easy way to illustrate; it’s like learning to drive with a stick (manual) vs learning to drive with an automatic car.

All said and done; I took out the other Abu Garcia MAX® series low profile reels and placed them on the table right next to this; the Abu Garcia MAX® X low profile reel. The other two seemed to look slightly bigger. Alas, it was a trick of the eye. Being black in colour the Abu Garcia MAX® X low profile reel looked smaller. It is still a small reel should you be wondering.
