Pocket Friendly Fishing Rod

Abu Garcia MAX X Fishing Rods

By: Phil Foo

Many years ago while I was on my way back to Selangor after visiting my family in Kuala Terengganu, my car decided to be a jerk just as we were about to leave Kuantan town. It decided not to move even with the engine running and my leg stepping on the accelerator. The gearbox just decided to not work. We were stranded in Kuantan. And because the car I drove was not a common model, the gearbox could not be fixed by the workshops in Kuantan.

[  This experience taught me a good lesson. Look at good value instead of merely price…   ]

To cut a long story short, we had an extra few days to spend in Kuantan. Being a holiday period, the hotels in Kuantan were fully booked and the only hotel with rooms available for Mega View Hotel that is located right beside the River in Kuantan Town. Mega View Hotel is its name (not sure if they are still around) but the room had no window. But being right beside the river is a plus for me, an angler.

The Abu Garcia MAX X rod, looks awesome, feels awesome, and awesomely priced.

Having left my fishing tackle in Kuala Terengganu, I visited the local tackle shop and bought a cheap rod and reel; just to have some fun at the river. That night I went down to the river and regretted buying a cheap rod and reel (locally branded yet sounded international by the way they advertised). The rod went limp and a guide ring fell off while playing the one and only fish that took the bait. The reel died too with the main gear breaking.

A combo set for about RM80 (if memory serves me right) back then bought me the biggest pile of crap. This experience taught me a good lesson. Look at good value instead of merely price. I ended up spending more the next day buying a proper fishing rod, reel, and lines. The RM80 burnt is considered learning fees for a valuable lesson.

Cheap Vs Pocket Friendly

When I say pocket friendly, I don’t mean cheap. I really meant good value for money. Cheap means cheap and that includes the cheap quality as well. Pocket friendly means that the products are of good quality but at a price range that will not burn a hole in your pocket just like the Abu Garcia MAX X fishing rod is.

[  . Being lightweight and well balance allows the angler to use less energy fishing…   ]

So how is the Abu Garcia MAX X fishing rod? For starters, it comes with a 24-ton graphite blank adorned by attractive geometric designs. The colours are also attractive being orange, white, a bit or red here and there, and black. Abu Garcia’s new MAX series rods all come with modern attractive designs. The MAX X too is just awesome looking.

The MAX X rod is built well. It is lightweight within the 24-ton rod segment and price range. It is also a really well balanced rod, meaning that the weight disappears further when the rod is horizontal, or in fishing stance. This makes the MAX X an awesome rod to use when fishing for long hours. Being lightweight and well balance allows the angler to use less energy fishing.

Quality tough guides of the Abu Garcia MAX X rod.

Like all good rods, the MAX X has a strong and good backbone; exuding lots of power when fighting a fish. The power curve is also stable which means that there is no sudden loss of power when battling a fish. The MAX X also comes with a hook-keeper, offering a safe place to hold one’s hook as one moves to another fishing spot.

Overall the Abu Garcia MAX X is an awesome rod for the price range that it sits in. It offers a very well built rod that performs well when out in the water catching fish. And yes, it is awesome value for money and it definitely is a pocket friendly rod. So if you are looking for a good rod on a budget, the MAX X is a good option. Don’t be like me back in the day. Don’t be a sucker for cheap tackle. Get a good pocket friendly one instead.
