Abu Garcia ZATA Spinning Reel
In an earlier issue we introduced the Abu Garcia ZATA reels (spinning and low profile baitcasting). We had not seen the finished product then. Anyway, that was then. Now I finally got to hold, feel, and play with the ZATA spinning and baitcasting reels (the Zata spinning is not it the market at time of writing), and I like them. In this article I will focus on the spinning reel.
The Abu Garcia ZATA spinning reel. Looking good in army or military matte green, with black, and red dots.
When I first saw the Abu Garcia ZATA reels I had some reservations with regard to its colour. Well, I was actually more shocked by surprise because of its colour. The reason is because army green, or rather matte army green is a risky colour to use. Some like it and some need more time to take it in before liking it. Anyway, it took a few minutes before the feeling of shock went. I then started to appreciate it. I like it.

Coming in army matte green, the Abu Garcia ZATA looks like it is battle ready. Perhaps a better word to use is “combat.” Yes, the ZATA looks combat ready. It looks like it is ready for jungle warfare. An encounter with the brutes of the jungle waters will certainly be lots of fun especially with a reel like this; the Abu Garcia ZATA.

Combat Sports Car
Just like sports car enthusiasts, anglers prefer their equipment light. But in the military, most of their equipment are heavy. Tanks are heavy. Trucks are heavy. Guns are heavy. The Abu Garcia ZATA is a combination of both army toughness and sporty lightness. Imagine if guns were built that way. But there is a good reason for the weight when it comes to guns. As for the ZATA, I am glad that it is lightweight.
So what makes the Abu Garcia ZATA spinning reel a lightweight reel. The Abu Garcia ZATA spinning comes in a lightweight aluminium frame and a lightweight machined aluminium Braid ready spool. These aluminium frame and spool are not only lightweight. They are also tough and rigid providing anglers with confidence when fighting fishes.
Machined aluminium braid ready spool that is tough and lightweight. The Zata spinning reel comes with 11 high quality stainless steel bearings.
Abu Garcia’s spinning reels have certainly come a long way since its early days many many many years ago. These reels have improved tremendously in terms of smoothness, operations, and toughness. The Abu Garcia ZATA spinning reels are smooth. Turn the beautiful carbon handle and one feels it instantly.
What A Drag
Of course smoothness is not just linked to the rotation of its well balanced rotor and gears. The Abu Garcia ZATA spinning reels come with Abu Garcia’s proven drag system that uses carbon fibre drag disc; providing smoothness throughout the drag range during fights with hard fighting fishes. The Abu Garcia ZATA comes with a 6.4kg drag rating.
6.2:1 gear ratio.
Good Cast And Retrieve
With Abu Garcia’s proven Rocket Spool Lip Design spool and Rocket Line Management system, the Abu Garcia ZATA spinning cast further as the Rocket Spool Lip Design spool lip allows for smoother line flow with reduced friction between line and spool lip. A well arranged line in the spool helps too. This is done by the Rocket Line Management system that lays line in good order, ready for the next cast.
