Introducing: Penn Fathom Low Profile Baitcasting Reel
By The Angler
Penn is the household name when it comes to saltwater fishing. It has been so for a very long time. Talk about big game fishing for fishing line marlin, tuna, etc.; Penn is most likely the brand that comes to mind. So, what is Penn doing tinkering about low profile baitcasting reels; reels that are more familiar to freshwater anglers and freshwater angling?
Of course there are saltwater low profile baitcasting reels in the market. Penn’s sister company, Abu Garcia has launched a few over the years. With the ability to share technologies, technical knowledge, engineering capabilities, and of course parts; building tough, durable, powerful, and high quality low profile baitcasting reels will not be an issue for a brand like Penn.

One of the low profile baitcasting reels launched by Penn recently is the sporty, dark, and mysterious looking Penn Fathom low profile baitcasting reel. One can certainly see some of Penn’s signature cosmetics at play here. Fan of Penn’s will certainly notice the similarity of colours between the Penn Fathom round reels and these new low profile baitcasting reels.

Awesome Looking
The Penn Fathom low profile baitcasting reel is aerodynamically designed. it is sleek, sharp, and could very well be the Ferrari in the world of exotic cars. A Ferrari but with Land Rover capabilities; how awesome is that? If you cannot fathom what I am saying perhaps let me paint you this picture; imagine a Ferrari driving through the jungle together with a bunch of Land Rovers. Whooopy!
A spool deep enough for most types of fishing, and especially important when fishing at sea.
Dual Braking System
When it comes to casting out lures at sea; one has to take not only manage the spool but also the rocking action of the boat. Waves are one thing to take on, the winds are another monster. Granted that winds are also present at rivers and lakes, but land seldom rocks. If it does you had better prepare for disaster.
6 pin Centrifugal brakes.
To take on the rocking boat and the crazy winds when fishing out at sea, the Penn Fathom low profile baitcasting reel comes with a dual braking system that Penn calls Dual Action Casting Brake. This simply means that the Penn Fathom low profile baitcasting reel comes with a centrifugal braking system and a magnetic braking system. This allows for more brake settings to take on whatever the sea throws at you.
Magnetic brakes.
Powerful Drag
Needless to say, saltwater fishes fight harder than their freshwater cousins (pound for pound). That said, we do have freshwater fishes in our waters that can drag boats too. Anyway, the Penn Fathom low profile baitcasting reel comes with Penn’s well known and proven HT-100™ drag system with drag pressure settings of 24lb to 30lb depending on reel model. These settings are good enough to take on most sea fishes.
