I have been fishing saltwater fishes for quite some time and the saltwater environment is really harsh to fishing reels. Needless to say, saltwater fishes fight really hard. A good example is the speedy sailfish; the Ferrari of the seas. It is one of the fastest fish in the sea. That is why saltwater reels have got to be really tough. PENN certainly knows this.

PENN reels have for many years been the staple of saltwater anglers, especially big game anglers. In my years battling it out with sailfishes I have seen reels break and jam. Although this does not happen often; they do. The speeds of which these fishes swim can wear out the gears and drags of lesser reels fast. Over time one realizes that only tough high quality reels are to be used on such trips.

Recently PENN released the new PENN Slammer IV Spinning Reel, a reel made to handle the harsh conditions of the saltwater environment. Being a full metal bodied reel, it is a super tough reel with IPX6 Sealed body and spool. This means that the PENN Slammer IV spinning reel is basically a waterproof reel that can keep out water from powerful water jets protecting the gears from corrosion as sea water contains salt and other impurities that are known to damage gears.
IPX6 – What It Means
IPX6: Standards as stated in Wikipedia
Test duration: 1 minute per square meter for at least 3 minutes
Water volume: 100 liters per minute (0.37 impgal/s) Pressure: 100 kPa (15 psi) at distance of 3 meters (9.8 ft)
Tough and rigid full metal body that is rated IPX6 water proof.
Take In The Toughness
When you are out there at the tackle shop wandering about and filling your basket with fishing tackle for your up and coming fishing trips, lookout for the Penn Spinfisher IV spinning reels. Give them a few spin and perhaps you will understand why this reel is no silky smooth shinning fairy’s wand, but a rough and tough giant slayer.
This reel, the PENN Slammer IV 4500 comes with a 6.2:1 gear ratio.
Caress the Penn Spinfisher IV spinning reel and give a squeeze here and there. You will notice that it is one tough and rigid reel. When it comes to slaying big game fishes, a rigid and tough reel is no longer an option but a must. Have a look at its main shaft, the thickness, and toughness of it. Then take notice of its muscular bail-arm and bail wire. All of them are tough and ready to battle hard fighting monsters. A lesser reel will break in desperation.
A larger handle knob for better grip when fighting fish.
An alternative is an EVA handle knob that is also larger.
