Dura-4 BraiD

SpiderWire will soon be launching a new line called the SpiderWire® DURA-4 Braid. The number 4 here actually means 4 carrier or carries. This simply means that 4 strings of PE lines are braided together into one stronger PE line.

Why 4 Carrier Or Carries?

Well braided lines simply means lines braided together and it takes as little as two lines (carrier or carries) braided together into one to be called braided line. Some braided lines can be as low as two carrier, some 3, and some 4 as in the case of the SpiderWire Dura-4 Braid. Some go all the way up to 8 (Berkley Fireline Ultra 8).

Needless to say that if a line is classified as 10lb breaking strength then it will take up to a force of at least 10lb (or it should). So let’s just take breaking strength out of the equation and look at other factors. Another thing to note before we continue is that there are a few types of materials used with some being better than others. So we remove material types from the equation.

Durability

Assuming that all lines are made of the same material, the one with more carrier or carries will provide better durability. Lines fray due to abrasion with snags and whatnots leaving them damaged thus weakening them. A 4 carrier will withstand abrasion better that that of a 2 and 3 carrier.

4 carrier or carries makes for smoother lines that are also more durable.

Smoother

Having more carriers weaved together makes for smoother lines as they can be tightly weaved covering more gaps. The lower the carrier used the more gaps can be felt on the surface of the line. So a 4 carrier line will provide for smoother casting as compared to lines with 2 and 3 carrier.

Cost Management

Again assuming that the materials used are the same; the more carrier used the higher the cost of manufacturing. While the 4 carrier lines of the SpiderWire Dura-4 Braid will cost less that it’s 8 carrier brethren it will certainly cost more that those with 2 or 3 carrier. 4 carrier actually allows it to be at a comfortable price range.

The Sum Of It All

Weighing all these things one will note that the SpiderWire Dura-4 Braid is a good value for money type of line. It certainly is of higher quality compared to line with lower carrier number and lines made of lower quality materials but cost lower than the superb 8 carrier Berkley.
