The Reel Monsters Fear – Penn Authority Spinning Reel
By: The Angler
Word within the monster circle is “caution.” The monsters of the seas, oceans, rivers, lakes, and ponds tremble at the word Penn and have been doing so since 1932 when Otto Henze founded the Penn Fishing Tackle Company. When Penn announced the launch of a new spinning reel, the Penn Authority; there was silence in these watery kingdoms, followed by a mad rush of “monster leaders” calling for a meeting of sorts with the high council of monster fishes.
[ First of all, it is super tough and rigid without flex as stated above. Next, it comes with a water tight IPX8 sealed body and spool… ]
Yes, these monsters certainly have reasons to fear. The Penn Authority spinning reel is another super tough fishing reel that Penn is known around the world for. It comes cladded in metal from its reel foot, to its sideplate, and to its rotor. They are all rigid and tough, and do not flex despite the high pressure placed on them. This means that should a shark decide to bite on it, the shark will most likely lose a few teeth.
The Penn Authority is a super tough, rigid, and powerful spinning reel.
Monster Performance
So what makes the Penn Authority such a powerful reel? First of all, the Penn Authority is a full metal bodied reel. This means that it is tough and rigid. But there are a good number of full metal bodied reels in the market. So, what makes the Penn Authority different? First of all, it is super tough and rigid without flex as stated above. Next, it comes with a water tight IPX8 sealed body and spool.
IPX8 means that the reel can take continuous immersion in water without harmful effects (conditioned specified by the manufacturer). For us anglers it means that the if the reel accidentally gets submerged in water, we have nothing to worry about. Just pick it up and continue fishing with it. Water will not enter the areas of the reel that can cause it to be damaged. Needless to say, do wash your reels after every trip.
The Penn Authority is IPX8 sealed for awesome waterproofing.
The waterproofing continues with the drag that the Penn Authority uses. The Penn Authority comes with the powerful Sealed Slammer drag system with Penn’s famed Dura-Drag. This means that water will not get into the drag area and affect it while you are fishing; enforcing continuous even pressure on the hard fighting fish. Knowing Penn’s powerful Dura-Drag system, the fishes certainly need to worry.
Penn’s long proven Dura-Drag system puts high pressure on monster fishes.
The Penn Authority uses CNC Gear Technology with stainless steel main and pinion gears to handle the heavy pressure put on by monster fishes. With such tough materials used, the reel is made to handle torture and to dish out torture. The Penn Authority will indeed impose its authority on these monsters of the seas, lakes, rivers, etc.
[ When it comes to looks, the Penn Authority is the gun that will put fear into the heart of your opponent… ]
So much toughness in a package; like a monster truck, the Penn Authority is no child’s toy. As with Penn reels in general; the gearing feels connected and strong. There is no feeling of nothingness when one cranks the handle of these reels. The Penn Authority too feels connected. Smoothness of the reel comes from the 12+1 stainless steel bearing system. Not only do they provide smoothness but also better durability.
The Penn Authority comes with a superline ready spool.
One other thing I want to highlight is the large line-roller at the bail-arm of the Penn Authority. Penn has designed it for smoother retrieve and minimization in line twist. Another important part of the line-roller is the screw that locks the line roller at the bail-arm. It is designed in such a way that the screw is locked in place. This means that the screw will not become loose and create havoc when fishing.
Aesthetics
Before I tell you what I think of the aesthetics of the Penn Authority, I have a question for you to ponder. If you were to be going into battle with a fierce opponent, would you prefer to go in with a diamond studded, colourful Nerf gun, adorned with faux fur, or would you prefer to choose a gun that would put fear into the heart of your opponent just by the way it looks? That is for you to ponder.
Super tough and muscular main shaft that can handle lots of pressure.
When it comes to looks, the Penn Authority is the gun that will put fear into the heart of your opponent. It looks like it is made to do battle and to inflict serious damage. It definitely does not look like it was made to win the most graceful ballet contest. With its matte black base, adorned with gun metal silver, and gold linings; one can tell that the Penn Authority is purpose built to bring down, or rather bring up hard fighting monsters of the sea, rivers, lakes, etc.
That said, the Penn Authority actually looks good; a rugged good looking reel. It comes with a good looking spool that look as if it got scratched by some monster (werewolf comes to mind). The side plates have gun metal silver washers with gold engraves that makes it look as if it is in motion. The Penn Authority comes with two large handle knobs. One is a metal one that looks really good. The other is made of Hypalon that offers a good grip when fighting fish.
A special kind of screw is used to ensure that it does not go loose.
Not Just A Reel
To sum up, the Penn Authority spinning reel is not just a reel. It is a monster killing machine. It is purpose built to help anglers subdue hard fighting fishes be it in the sea, river, lake, or pond. It is a tool of power and any angler that picks it up and fishes with it will know that. I have fished with it and I can say that the Penn Authority is not a reel for show off anglers who prefer “show reels and rods” over toughness and hardcore performance. The Penn Authority is for serious hardcore anglers.
