To bait casters (anglers who do bait casting) the Abu Garcia Revo low profile bait casting reel series needs no introduction.Abu Garcia Revo reels have proven themselves time and again to be reliable, tough, and smooth performers that fit snugly in the hands of most angler. Individually, these reels have their own strengths for different types of fishing. The Abu Garcia Revo X Inshore is made for saltwater inshore fishing as its name suggests.
In the last issue we introduced the Abu Garcia Revo X Inshore as a reel as the dark horse of the Revo bait casting reel family not just because of its colour (matte black) but also because of the way it looks and handles. This time we take the Abu Garcia Revo X Inshore and see how well it can handle the hard fighting gladiators of the Amazon basin.

Casting Abilities
Bait casting reels are made for casting but because we are testing its capabilities such as power or strength, drag capabilities, as well as toughness; bottom fishing with bait is how we went about our test since that is the most effective way to get fishes to bite at the Natural Exotic Sports Fishing Pond in Tanjung Malim. Still we did a lot of casting using a 30g jig head and hooking on pieces of fish head to it. The Abu Garcia Revo X Inshore cast really well sending our baits far enough to reach the fishing zone.

It’s magnetic brakes and the friction from the spool control is good enough to provide for smooth confident casts. We never had issues with backlash. Even anglers that are still quite new to baitcasting did not have an issue with backlash. Of course higher brake settings did help but at the expense of distance. The more experience bait casters got good distances on lower levels of brake forces and thumbing.

Fish Management
It did not take long before our offerings were hammered by the Amazon red tail catfish. These gladiators fight very hard. They may not rank high when it comes to speed but they certainly do swim fast and can strip lines even on high drag. These fighters are made of muscles. They are like the rhinoceros of the freshwater rivers and lakes.
Hot in battle with a hard fighting gladiator.
Every time an Amazon red tail catfish took our bait it would strip lines off the Abu Garcia Revo X Inshore. There is no sticky feeling despite setting the drag pretty high. Even after a few hard fought battles the drag remained smooth. During the fights we do increase the drag to put more pressure on the fish yet still it performed smoothly and well. We reached very high drag levels but we never did max it out as we always had enough to turn the fish when needed and tire it.
A smooth high performance reel.
Feeling During Battles
When it comes to feel, the Abu Garcia Revo X Inshore felt secure and rigid even under heavy pressure. Sitting snugly in the palms; the Revo X Inshore was comfortable to hold providing a good grip. This in turn gave us a feeling of confidence during hard battles. It is also a smooth operator and have good amounts of cranking power. A bigger EVA knob will certainly feel better during hard fights but this (the one’s that come with the reel originally) is good enough.

All In All
Overall the Abu Garcia Revo X Inshore is a good performer in a nice package. It cast well as with all Revo low profile bait casting reels, has a smooth drag, has enough power to handle the hard fighting fishes at our test pond, and generally operates smoothly. It is also small in size and thus provides for a good grip. It is also a decently weighted reel which helps conserve some energy while fishing.
